Downing Street faces pressure to explain why she was reappointed Home Secretary despite being sacked the previous week
Rishi Sunak wants to give Suella Braverman a “second chance”, a cabinet minister has said, amid ongoing questions about her reappointment as Home Secretary.
Downing Street on Thursday faced pressure to explain why Mrs Braverman was handed back her former role at the Home Office, despite being sacked the previous week for two breaches of the ministerial code.
Lord Blunkett, who served as home secretary under Sir Tony Blair, and former members of Parliament’s intelligence watchdog warned her return could undermine her relationship with MI5 and make other countries less likely to share intelligence with the UK.
Ministers also face calls for an inquiry into Mr Sunak’s decision to reappoint her after she sent government papers to a backbench Conservative MP from her personal phone.
