Rishi Sunak sent huge warning by Just Stop Oil ahead of COP27

Rishi Sunak has been sent a huge warning by crusading environmental group Just Stop Oil ahead of COP27 after the Prime Minister made a dramatic U-turn on attending the climate summit. Mr Sunak had argued he needed to focus on the “depressing domestic challenges” as he worked on the Autumn Budget with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt. But he has now seemingly bowed to pressure over his attendance after accepting there is “no long-term prosperity without action on climate change”.Earlier this week, Just Stop Oil said it would be pausing disruption after more than a month of protests to give the Government time to “consider their responsibilities to this country”.This came after protesters tried to climb the gates of Downing Street before moving onto blocking roads surrounding Trafalgar Square. Some glued themselves to the tarmac before being dragged away by police officers. The activists are demanding ministers respond to their calls for new oil and gas licences to be halted, or else they will “escalate” their activities.Speaking ahead of COP27, a Just Stop Oil spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Rishi Sunak is ditching the toxic policies of Liz Truss. In doing so he will be protecting our rights and freedoms, and our democracy.”But Just Stop Oil has vowed to “escalate” protest action if the Government fails to respond to their calls for new oil and gas licences to be halted. The spokesperson told this website: What do you think will be the correct action to take against a government that is planning the deaths of millions, planning for the end of ordered civil society?”Just Stop Oil will continue in Civil Resistance until the government stops harming us, the ordinary everyday people of this country.”READ MORE: Sunak to extend freeze on ‘hated’ 55pc pension tax for two years Police remove a Just Stop Oil supporter after a group blocked Whitehall outside Downing Street (Image: GETTY)When announcing a pause in disruption on Tuesday, the group warned: “From today Just Stop Oil will pause its campaign of civil resistance.”We are giving time to those in the Government who are in touch with reality to consider their responsibilities to this country at this time.”If, as we sadly expect, we receive no response from ministers to our demand by the end of Friday November 4, we will escalate our legal disruption against this treasonous Government.”Our action will be proportionate to the task of stopping the crime against humanity which is new oil and gas.”DON’T MISSSuella Braverman is our only hope in fighting the immigrant invasion [OPINION]Rishi Sunak under pressure as triple lock backed in new poll [LATEST]’Not his last chance!’ Boris Johnson biding his time for comeback [COMMENTS] Just Stop Oil protesters blocked the gates leading to Downing Street (Image: GETTY) Boris Johnson is attending the COP27 climate summit in Egypt (Image: GETTY)On Tuesday, Just Stop Oil protesters had tried to climb the gates of Downing Street on Tuesday before moving on to blocking roads surrounding Trafalgar Square. One group blocked the busy central London route of Whitehall by sitting in the road, with some gluing themselves to the tarmac, while others tried to climb the Downing Street gates.Officers shouted “make way” and “come back please” as armed police prevented some protesters from jumping over the smaller gate and removed a woman who was climbing up the main gate. The activists were dragged by officers towards police vans as members of the public filmed and watched.A Just Stop Oil spokesman said: “Rishi Sunak is about to U-turn on attending COP27. We demand that he also U-turn on new oil and gas.”This genocidal policy will kill millions of people while failing to address the worst cost-of-living crisis this country has ever seen.”The Metropolitan Police said: “Two Just Stop Oil protesters who crossed over the outer vehicle gates on the Whitehall side of the main gates of Downing Street were swiftly prevented from climbing the main gates by police officers present.”Other protesters with them were also quickly prevented from doing the same or further blocking the road and directed to the pavement.”Five other protesters who sat down and briefly blocked the road opposite Downing Street in Whitehall at the same time were arrested on suspicion of obstruction of the highway. They have been taken into custody to a central London police station.”
