It's not clear exactly what images helped Heuermann's wife of at least 25 years accept her husband could have been the Long Island Serial Killer. Numerous images seen in court documents showed Heuermann, 59, buying apparent burner phones and posing for chilling selfies while allegedly paying for the services of sex workers. While DNA from Ms Ellerup's own hair has been pivotal in the Gilgo Beach case, officials say she was travelling each time the four women known as the 'Gilgo Four' disappeared. Heuermann has been charged with first- and second-degree murder in three of the cases. Heuermann has been charged with the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello - he has denied all charges. He is also reportedly being investigated in the death of Maureen-Brainard Barnes, the fourth of the 'Gilgo Beach Four'. The four women's bodies were discovered along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach in Long Island in December 2010. Commissioner Harrison previously told CNN that the reaction of Ms Ellerup and her two children suggested they had no idea "about this double life" of Heuermann as an alleged killer.
