Ramsdale sets Arsenal “psychological boost” target in Premier League title race

Arsenal are leading the Premier League and are targeting wins against Chelsea and Wolves in their last two matches before the World Cup to make sure they are top at Christmas

Aaron Ramsdale admits topping the Premier League table in two games’ time would give Arsenal a “massive psychological boost” in their pursuit of the title.

And boss Mikel Arteta reckons it’s high time they did win it given it is more than 18 years since they were last crowned champions of England. The Gunners face two tough games in the top flight, away to Chelsea on Sunday and then Wolves on Saturday before the World Cup break.

But if they can get there ahead of defending-champions Manchester City, then goalkeeper Ramsdale, who is set to be named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Qatar, knows it will be a major fillip in their bid to still be top at the end of the campaign.

He said: “It would be massive – if we go in [to the break] like that [top] then we have obviously had a great first period of the league. And then throughout the World Cup the management staff can re-evaluate things, players who have stayed behind can train really hard and then when we come back in we can obviously try to put all that work on to paper. So it’s going to be a massive psychological boost if we can do that.”
