One of Sweet Auburn's back legs appeared to snap as they approached the final bend before one of Thermusa's front legs snapped moments later. Both were immediately put down. An inspection was held regarding the safety of the ground involving jockeys and trainers, and the stewards ordered the meeting to be abandoned. Four races had already been completed without concerns. Michael Naughton, the Clerk of the Course, insisted: "Nothing was found and obviously the safety of horses is paramount which is why we have chosen to abandon the races. "A couple of trainers voiced their concerns and obviously they have to keep their owners happy too. "We lost two horses in the same race and have decided to abandon. The ground was perfectly fine and everybody has said that. They have raced around the bend five times and it has been fine every other race. The meeting was abandoned after the tragic race "It will be all hands on deck. We will do a thorough search of the top bend to make sure everything is 100 percent fine for the next meet." Thursday’s meeting at Sedgefield was abandoned amid safety concerns after two horses died in the same race.
Both Sweet Auburn and Thermusa were pulled up sharply after suffering injuries in the closing stages of the 2.55 contest, the Stanley and Lillian Thompson Memorial Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle. Sadly both injuries proved to be fatal.
It proved to be the fifth and final race of the afternoon of the scheduled seven-race card with the final two events being abandoned amid worries over safety.
The decision to call off the meeting was made after a deputation of jockeys and trainers inspected the Co Durham track.
