Research conducted by Airtasker has revealed that 43 percent of Britons won’t be moving homes in the next five years due to rents and mortgage rates rising and 68 percent are shifting towards making ‘affordable home improvements’ over the next year instead. To offer their help further, the Style Sisters , close friends Gemma Lilly and Charlotte Reddington who have been transforming the homes of the rich and famous since 2019, have shared their top five tips on how to create curb appeal with the front exterior of homes for a ‘minimal spend’. 1. Jet wash the outside driveway and pavement to make the property look much cleaner Home exteriors tend to get neglected. Households will be amazed at how dirty driveways and pavements can get dirty and build up with dust. The experts said: ‘Jet washing reveals the true colours of the surface underneath, and the results are immediately noticeable. People are often surprised by how new and bright their drives and pavements look after cleaning .’ Jet wash the outside driveway and pavement to make the property look much cleaner (Image: Getty) According to the Style Sisters, painting the exterior of a home is one of ‘the quickest and most impactful ways to freshen up a tired or dated property’. Whether households are applying the same colour or opting for a more drastic change of style with a new colour, a new coat of paint will give a property an ‘immediate lift’. The property pros explained: ‘Front doors are the first area of the home you see. It is the focal point for your house’s exterior and sets the interior’s tone.’ When picking the new colour for the door, choose a colour that complements the colour of the window frames on the property, the outside furniture, and the colour of the garden and flowers around it. Gemma and Charlotte added: ‘We suggest that once you have picked the colour, you can make your door stand out with a glossy finish giving you a real boost for a minimal spend.’ Paint the outside and front doors of the house to immediately improve the visual appeal (Image: Getty) It is always possible to make a small improvement, even if it’s just getting new door numbers to replace old and outdated ones. 3. Wash windows to improve the overall look of a property from the inside and outside Windows are ‘one of the first things people notice’ when they approach a house and dirty or streaked windows can make it look ‘shabby and neglected’. To clean them properly, the pair recommends using a window cleaning spray and a microfibre cloth. Make sure to start with the frames first to avoid dripping dirty water on clean panes. As well as being ‘instantly noticeable’, cleaning windows lets in more light, as smears on windows ‘reduce the amount of natural light entering your home’. Purchasing new, matching curtains and blinds in every room is one of the ‘safest and most effective ways’ to achieve a clean look on the outside and tie the spaces together inside. 5. Look after the plants at the front of the house For those who have a front hedge, it is worth giving it a short back and sides to make it feel ‘fresh and new’. Or, for those who only have a small space at the front, they can plant a pretty border of flowers to give the area a medley of colour and height. If households do not have a front garden, look to hanging baskets, pretty window boxes and smart potted shrubs to border the front door as ‘they make all the difference’.
