One in four councils in England are said to be planning to double the amount of council tax levied on second homes before new powers are approved by parliament.
The government’s Levelling-up and Regeneration Bill, which will give councils the ability to apply a council tax premium of up to 100 per cent on second homes, is making its way through the House of Lords before it receives royal assent later this year.
But 78 of the 297 authorities responsible for council tax have already voted in favour of raising bills, according to an analysis by The Daily Telegraph. This includes councils in popular holiday destinations such as Cornwall, Devon, the Isle of Wight and the Lake District.
