Putin has isolated Russia from the international community with his invasion of Ukraine (Image: Getty)The war has entered a new phase, based on a return to mass indiscriminate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure. This includes the use of kamikaze drones – much like Hitler’s deployment of V-1 flying bombs in London in 1944.The kamikaze drones are a new form of vengeance weapon meant to terrorise the Ukrainian people, which is counter to jus in bello. Two important points come from the discussion of ‘just’ versus ‘unjust’ wars. The first is the urgent need for the UN General Assembly to reach an agreement regarding jus in bello, or the right conduct war that includes recent innovations in weaponry. It must include a statement that indiscriminate use of kamikaze drones is morally unjustifiable and must be defined as a crime against humanity and war crime. The second concerns countries directly or indirectly supporting Russia or Ukraine. Now is the time to reconsider any support for Russia, while countries that are supporting Ukraine must enhance their level of support. Putin must be forced to regret his special military operation by those who recognise that his war is unjust.
