Puppy dumped on roadside verge sniffs out a new life in the police force

Chester the cocker spaniel may have sensed something was amiss when he was abandoned on the roadside on a cold night. At four months old, he was one of six puppies left in a cage on a grass verge near Canterbury. But after being rescued by the RSPCA in January he will now be using his sensory skills in his role as a police sniffer dog.

Chester was one of four cocker spaniels and two terrier crossbreeds dumped after they had passed the age where they were at their most “cute” for buyers, according to the RSPCA. The charity had problems rehoming him because of his boundless energy, until his foster owner noticed his superb sense of smell that would make him an ideal candidate
