Voters want fishing banned in 40 per cent of Scottish waters to help preserve the country’s marine wildlife, a survey has found.
The area is four times greater than that ministers planned to cover when they proposed the controversial highly protected marine areas (HPMAs).
The Scottish government sought to introduce HPMAs in 10 per cent of Scottish waters but the plan was scrapped after opposition from fishing communities and other campaigners.

A new poll says, however, that people in Scotland support a large area being set aside for nature restoration, with fishing excluded.
