Prince William visibly moved as he learns of shocking suicide stats on building site visit

Prince William today visited a building site in North Acton, west London, where he met construction workers and chatted with them about their mental health, which he has put at the forefront of his public work

Prince William spoke passionately of his determination to help ‘normalise’ mental health as he met construction workers on a London building site today.

The Prince of Wales, 41, was visibly moved as he discussed shocking statistics, which show that people working in the building industry have some of the highest suicide rates in the country. They are more than three times higher than the national average, with 507 construction workers taking their own lives in 2021. That equates to an average of around two a day.

The prince, who along with his wife Kate has put mental health at the forefront of his public work, said he wanted to help people understand that their emotional well-being is as important as their physical health. And he said it was crucial to ensure that problems can be identified at the earliest possible stage before they turn into a ‘crisis’.

“We want to help empower people to speak about their problems in a safe space and ensure mental health is embedded in everything we do,” the prince said. “It’s important everyone has the ability to be open.”
