Prince Harry wanted Diana’s ring for his wife

Kate Middleton was gifted Princess Diana’s iconic 18-carat sapphire engagement ring when Prince William popped the question, but according to a royal expert, Harry had hoped to keep it

The royal family has a number of dazzling items of jewellery, from stunning tiaras to sparkling brooches, earrings, and necklaces, but one of the most instantly recognisable pieces is the 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring that used to belong to Princess Diana.

The ring now sits on Kate Middleton’s left hand, after it was given to her by Prince William in 2010 when he popped the all-important question after years of dating. The Princess of Wales showed off the dazzling ring during their engagement photos and many have since coveted the iconic piece – including Prince Harry, who had reportedly hoped to give it to his own wife one day.

This is according to Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, who previously revealed that after she died in 1997, Charles had allowed his two sons to select a special item from her jewellery collection to keep. It is believed that Harry was the one who originally asked for her engagement ring, while William opted for a Cartier watch instead.

Speaking in Amazon Prime’s The Diana Story documentary, Paul recalled that William had said: “I’d like mummy’s Cartier watch, the one that Grandpa Spencer gave to her for her 21st birthday.” He went on to claim that Harry wanted the ring as it had sentimental value. He recalled how Harry had once said: “I remember when I held mummy’s hand when I was a small boy and that ring always hurt me because it was so big.”
