Premier League clubs on collision course with FA over foreign player restrictions

Premier League clubs want the rules on signing foreign players to be relaxed but are facing a battle with the FA, which fears doing so would have a negative impact on the England team.

Rules on buying overseas players were tightened due to Brexit and the top-flight clubs claim that the move has inflated transfer fees. The issue is expected to be raised at a Premier League shareholders meeting on Tuesday as part of discussions of its New Deal for Football proposals.

The FA is expected to resist any attempts to relax the rules of its Governing Body Endorsements (GBEs), the points-based system that decides whether a player can be granted a work permit.
