The event usually attracts millions of spectators cheering on their countries – but very little about this tournament is the same as previous ones.
This year’s World Cup has been laced with controversy ever since Qatar was named as the host in 2010.
Homosexuality is illegal in the conservative, Muslim country and technically could carry the death penalty – although there is no evidence of this punishment being enforced recently.
