The ultimate aim of a new migrant deal between Britain and France is to “completely” stop illegal small boat Channel crossings, the Foreign Secretary has said.
James Cleverly said the deal had been agreed by London and Paris in order to “get a grip” of the crossings crisis which has seen more than 40,000 people make the perilous journey so far this year.
He told Sky News: “Ultimately what we want to see is these crossings reduce completely but we have to be realistic that the people traffickers are working incredibly hard to try and beat law enforcement. We need to work just as hard to counter their illegal activities.”
He added: “We have got to get a grip of the international trade in human misery. These people traffickers who are putting lives at risk by facilitating the illegal crossing of migrants into the UK and around the world, we have got to get a grip of that and we have got to do that with partners.”
