The PM's spokesman said: 'Shoplifting is clearly unacceptable and the public would expect us to work with police forces to drive down crimes.' He added: 'Police forces in England and Wales have rightly committed to pursuing any available evidence where there's a reasonable chance that could lead them to catching a perpetrator and solving a crime. And we hope to see significant improvements in the way the police approach crimes like shoplifting to bring more offenders to justice.' Shoplifting is estimated to cost retailers almost £1billion a year. Dame Sharon White, chairwoman of the John Lewis Partnership, has described shoplifting in the UK as an "epidemic" and called for a comprehensive plan to stop organised gangs. John Lewis is among 10 of the UK's biggest retailers which have agreed to pay around £600,000 towards a police operation to crack down on shoplifting dubbed Project Pegasus.
