Police told to bring more shoplifters to book as gangs threaten terrified staff

Rishi Sunak branded the rise in shop thefts ‘unacceptable’ as he vowed to work with police chiefs to tackle the epidemic that is sweeping Britain’s high streets

Rishi Sunak has demanded the police bring more shoplifters to book just hours after we launched our new campaign.

The PM branded the rise in thefts “unacceptable” as he vowed to work with police chiefs to tackle the epidemic that is sweeping Britain’s high streets.

The Mirror is demanding action to stop gangs targeting shops, which is pushing food prices even higher for families. We are calling for police to investigate all shoplifting incidents. We also want to reverse Tory laws which downgraded the theft of goods worth less than £200 to a minor offence.

Our other demands include restoring the number of Police Community Support Offices so they can patrol our high streets and addressing the underlying causes of shoplifting by tackling the cost of living crisis and providing more support for people with addiction and poor mental health.
