Police dogs die from heat amid record temperatures in US

Highs of 43.3C recorded in Arizona and wildfires spread into Nevada as Joe Biden sunbathes on beach with his wife Jill in Delaware

Sniffer dogs overheated and died in a police truck while being transported across states amid soaring temperatures in the United States.

An estimated eight German shepherds who were being moved from Chicago to Indiana to a police training centre died after an air-conditioning unit in the vehicle failed.

The Lake Station Police Department did not say how many dogs were being transported, nor how many had died.

According to the New York Times, a local animal rescue organisation suggested that 18 dogs were in the vehicle, estimating that at least eight of them had died as a result of the air conditioning failure.
