Pokémon has to change admits development boss

It seems The Pokemon Company won’t slow down its game releases in the short term, but it is aware that things may need to change.

For as popular and financially profitable as the Pokemon games continue to be, the last several years have seen them become inundated with cyclical complaints of technical issues, performance problems, and underwhelming visuals.

All of these are attributed to The Pokemon Company’s very strict release schedule. New mainline games come out annually and are typically handled by Game Freak, which to this day still employs less than 200 people.

As such, some have called for each game to receive longer development cycles and while it doesn’t sound like The Pokemon Company will change its strategy any time soon, it at least seems aware that it needs some revision.

In the wake of this year’s Pokemon World Championships event, Takato Utsunomiya, chief operating officer at The Pokemon Company, was asked if the company is indeed beholden to a specific release schedule for the Pokemon games.
