But not long after 4:40pm - 9:40pm UK time - police drones around the house had spotted the gunman "prone" and bloody. Police confirmed Hardison's death 30 minutes later. Relatives of Hardison have said the house in Garfield was owned by his brother who recently died. A woman who identified herself as Hardison's sister - who is reportedly being used as a mediator in negotiations - described him as a 'good man' who has 'just lost a brother'. She noted that he served in the army. It was earlier thought he may be dead when the shooting stopped for an hour - and police brought out a remote-controlled armoured digger to check the house. But when shooting began again at 3pm, the media were removed from the area. Residents were already evacuated from the area due to the threat of stray bullets. The police said: "This is an extremely active situation with shots continuing to be fired. Please avoid the area at this time." One family member, Marlene Jones, told CBS the home had been left to Hardison - who was struggling with poor mental health. 'He just got worse and worse,' she explained, 'If they'd just let me or his girlfriend Karen go down there… She is preparing for the worst, she said 'I think they're going to kill him'.'
