Pittsburgh active shooter killed by police as family names squatter after long gunfight

We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and videos on this breaking news story.

A Pittsburgh grandfather who was embroiled in a major gunfight with the police while locked in his home has been killed.

William Bill Hardison holed himself in his house after police attempted to serve him an eviction notice – and began shooting at them. Over 1,000 shots were reportedly fired in the six-hour standoff between Hardison, 62, and the multiple SWAT teams which circled his house.

But not long after 4:40pm – 9:40pm UK time – police drones around the house had spotted the gunman “prone” and bloody. Police confirmed Hardison’s death 30 minutes later.

Relatives of Hardison have said the house in Garfield was owned by his brother who recently died. A woman who identified herself as Hardison’s sister – who is reportedly being used as a mediator in negotiations – described him as a “good man” who has “just lost a brother”. She noted that he served in the army.
