Pikmin 4 review: the pinnacle of the series that was worth the 10-year wait

Pikmin 4 sees Nintendo’s most underappreciated series returning with a new entry that is simultaneously its most accessible and most ambitious yet.

Pikmin 4 feels like Nintendo set out to make a ‘best of’ compilation for the Pikmin series and it delivers in spades . The game pulls features from all three prior entries and seamlessly blends them into what may be the series’ best planetary expedition yet.

Pikmin is Nintendo’s premiere real time strategy game series, but it’s never really taken the world by storm; something that can probably be attributed to the previous titles being tied to the Wii U and GameCube – Nintendo’s two worst-performing consoles. Sales aside, Pikmin 1, 2, and 3 are fantastic, and with a well-timed Pikmin 1+2 remake joining Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch, the franchise is primed for a renaissance. Pikmin 4 arrives just over a decade after Pikmin 3’s debut with an entry that should take Pikmin from being a plucky underdog and send it on a rocketship into superstardom.

Pikmin 4 opens with the franchise posterboy Captain Olimar crash-landing on the familiar planet of PNF-404 – which is implied to be Earth after human life is long gone – and sends out a distress signal to the entire galaxy. Luckily the Rescue Corps are on the case and head to the alien planet but also crash lands – in a streak of bad luck that’s a series staple.

Thankfully, their newest member (you) wasn’t on board and is sent on a double rescue mission.
