The former Pensions Minister claimed that delivering on the pension triple lock pledge was the right thing to do amidst the ongoing cost of living crisis. Baroness Altmann told Julia Hartley-Brewer that despite young people around the country not voting Conservative, they will still benefit from an inflation uplift this year. Since Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took office, demands for him to stick to the triple lock promise on pensions have risen due to fears, it could be scrapped. Ms Harlety-Brewer said: “The reality is if young people voted in the same rates as old people we would probably have a triple lock on student fees and benefits for younger people as well, wouldn’t we?”Baroness Altmann told Talk TV: “I honestly think that’s a bit of a myth.”And in any case, the Government seems rightly, in my view, to have decided that it will up-rate other benefits as well in line with inflation.”Because that is the right thing to do in the middle of a cost of living crisis.JUST IN: Herschel Walker calls himself ‘tough to beat’ on too-close-to-call Georgia Senate race Baroness Altmann talks triple lock pensions (Image: Getty/Talk TV) Department for work and pensions (Image: Getty)Baroness Altmann added: “If you are a country with a welfare state and you are a Government in charge of a country that’s looking to level up, you have to protect those at the bottom.”Otherwise levelling up means nothing, so I don’t think it’s about old people voting.”Young people may vote much less for Conservatives anyway, but they will still benefit from an inflation uplift this year, and as I say, quite rightly so.”But the idea that somehow we are being extremely generous to pensioners is one that I do think needs to be reconsidered.” READ MORE: Trump accuses Democrats of trying to ‘steal the election’ after machine issue in ArizonaPensioners in the UK are some of the worst affected by the cost of living crisis.People on state benefits have also been experiencing the negative effects of inflation.Wages have stayed the same but the increased pricing of food and energy has seen people turning to food banks.Reports have been trying to probe members of Parliament for information on what the budget may contain, in order to find out if the triple lock promise has been stuck to.DON’T MISS: King Charles to unveil new statue honouring ‘great service’ of late Queen Elizabeth[INSIGHT]GB News host in heated clash with Just Stop Oil protester: ‘You’re above the law?!’ [REVEAL]Bigamist’s ex-boyfriend was unfazed by her 5 husbands but dumped her because she ‘cheated’ [SPOTLIGHT] Pension triple lock (Image: Getty)The Prime Minister’s press secretary said that Mr Sunak would “do what is right and compassionate” but would not give further details.Mr Sunak’s secretary added: “I’m not getting into speculation on what is going to happen”.”A lot of these things have to be discussed with the Prime Minister and the Chancellor I’m not going to speculate on what is and isn’t going to be in the Budget.”I’m not going to comment on what decisions are going to be made.
