Report outlines proposals to push pylon projects through planning system and halve average 14-year building time
People should be paid to have pylons near their homes to speed up the construction of 600 miles of new cables across the UK, the Government’s net zero electricity tsar has said.
The new overground and underground cables will be needed by 2035 as part of a £54 billion plan to overhaul the grid to meet net zero goals.
On Friday, a new government-commissioned report outlined proposals to push pylon projects through the planning system and halve the average 14-year building time.
The report recommends that the Government introduces lump sum payments to households close to new lines, similar to compensation offered to homeowners affected by road-building projects.
