Patients pillory health secretary Humza Yousaf’s ‘sham’ chronic pain discourse

Patients have accused the Scottish health secretary, Humza Yousaf, of holding a “sham” consultation about improving services for people who are living in agony and peddling “spin” about his plans.

The cabinet minister has called a debate in Holyrood today to hail a new framework for the treatment of people with chronic pain and claims work is being done “in partnership” with patients to overhaul their care.

However, members of a cross-party group on chronic pain, patients and a former GP have criticised the claims.

Some patients who have suffered injuries or live with conditions such as arthritis or fibromyalgia experience incurable pain. In 2020 the Scottish government began work to draw up plans to improve the care they received.
