Partygate Tory swerves question about police probe after saying Met lack support

Lord Shaun Bailey launched an extraordinary attack on Sadiq Khan at the Tory Party Conference, but then refused to give an update on his own legal woes after a rulebreaking lockdown bash

A Partygate peer has launched an extraordinary rant about police not getting enough support to tackle crime – but then refused to answer questions about a probe into his own legal woes.

Lord Shaun Bailey, who was elevated by Boris Johnson this summer despite a police investigation, hit out over crime in London. Speaking to delegates at the Tory Party Conference in Manchester, he accused London Mayor Sadiq Khan of setting up an “arms race” on the Capital’s streets by criticising stop and search.

But he was more tight-lipped on his own legal woes when confronted by The Mirror. In July the Met Police re-opened an investigation into a “Jingle and Mingle” bash held by his campaign team in December 2020, after a new video surfaced of Tories partying.

It sparked calls for Lord Bailey’s elevation to the Lords to be delayed until the probe concluded – but this was ignored by the Government. Asked by The Mirror who this was progressing, he said: “I will never talk to you lot because you never treat me with any respect.”
