Experts warn tens of thousands of school-leavers could miss out on first choice university places as a result of Covid disruption
Students waiting for their A level results are the “unluckiest cohort” in recent years, an education expert has warned.
Lee Elliot Major, professor of social mobility at the University of Exeter, said that tens of thousands of school-leavers could miss out on their first choice university place if they fall short of target grades amid intense competition.
Eighteen year-olds have endured disruption to their education since 2020, but there will be fewer A grades awarded to them as exam boards in England return to tougher pre-pandemic boundaries, he said.
They also face one of the most competitive races for top university places in decades.
