Outrage as police officer shoots loose dog dead in front of on-lookers

Dixie the dog was shot approaching a police officer A community has been left outraged after a police officer reportedly gunned down a loose dog. Three-and-a-half-year-old golden retriever Dixie managed to escape from her family in Ohio on Sunday when she approached a police officer. The officer was then recorded on bodycam footage appearing to fatally shoot Dixie as she ran towards him. WKYC says the officer has since been placed on leave. Loraine Police Department told the New York Post the incident was “under investigation” but did not divulge any further information at this stage. A “Justice for Dixie” rally was held outside of the police department on Friday. Lt. Jacob Morris offered condolences to Dixie’s family during the rally. He said: “Regardless of the situation, they’re dealing with the loss of a family member. It hurts to even say that we were involved in that, but with that being said, we can offer our condolences — and we certainly, certainly do. ‘I’ve spoken to the family and (am) trying to be a resource for them as the investigative process rolls out.’ The officer was reportedly patrolling the area on Sunday when he noticed the dogs running around and asked the owner Tammie Kern to bring them under control. But she was then shot several times. Bodycam footage shows the scene outside the family’s Oberlin Avenue home as a different dog initially runs up to the police officer. But the cop sticks his hand out to wave the animal away. Dixie then also runs towards the officer, who can be seen raising the gun and unleashing the apparent fatal shot. The pooch can then be seen dragging herself to the sidewalk, wagging her tail as the officer approaches. ‘You stupid, f***, you killed my dog,’ Tammie could be heard telling the officer. ‘Why did you do it?’ The officer then told her the dog “charged” as the owner screamed on saying she was “harmless”. Police back-up then arrived as people poured out of their homes to see what was going on. Tammie can be seen screaming in grief while another resident tries to comfort her as Dixie lies just feet away.
