Not only are they now made of solid concrete, they're mounted on traffic islands , too. It's led to a number of annoyed residents blasting the scheme as a "waste of money" . Some residents also raised concerns that emergency vehicles were getting "stuck" and having to reroute. While some cars were simply ignoring the filters and driving around them by mounting the pavement. Manchester City Council has now secured the £7million in funding for the next phase of the scheme that will also include speed tables and road narrowing, chicanes and new road crossings and junctions. Council chiefs say measures will help tackle traffic-safety issues, including rat-running and speeding drivers going as fast as 60mph. But it's led to residents slamming the newer, reinforced concrete planters saying they've made their 'life a misery'. Taxi driver said Ahmed Ifdikher, 58, said: 'It's become a bad area for motorists because so many roads are closed. 'I have to make longer journeys and then get complaints from customers - many of them elderly people - that I have to charge them more. 'The council should be spending money on other things.
