Open-sea swimmer set to achieve world record

A Scotsman tackling the seven toughest open-sea swims in 12 months is poised to achieve a world record.

Andrew Donaldson, 32, has completed six of the seven channels in 11 months, attaining four British records and a world record for the Cook Strait between New Zealand’s north and south islands.

The Ayrshire athlete has swum the English Channel, the North Channel in Scotland, the Cook Strait, the Molokai Channel in Hawaii, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Catalina Channel in California.

Donaldson’s most difficult swim yet as part of the Oceans Seven challenge was the Molokai Channel. “I was getting thrown about like a rag doll in a washing machine,” he said. “When I finished, I noticed something was wrong.”
