Don’t let virtue signalling over unions hide the bitter reality of ‘Bidenomics’
There’s nothing the media hate more than a person who refuses to play by their rules. That’s a lesson Drew Barrymore learned the hard way this week. The actress was set to host the National Book Awards ceremony this fall – until she decided to continue her talk show, Hollywood strikes be damned.
“In light of the announcement that ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ will resume production, the National Book Foundation has rescinded Ms. Barrymore’s invitation to host the 74th National Book Awards Ceremony,” the National Book Foundation announced last week.
The Writers Guild of America strike has dragged on since May, with actors joining in July via the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. WGA and SAG-AFTRA may not be willing to move forward, but Barrymore is apparently not allowed to either, even though official union rules would have allowed the daytime talk show host to continue her program without her writers.
After criticism from WGA and a cancelled invitation from the National Book Awards, Barrymore posted and deleted an apology video, but left a statement up on Instagram saying, “I have no words to express my deepest apologies to anyone I have hurt and, of course, to our incredible team who works on the show and has made it what it is today. We really tried to find our way forward. And I truly hope for a resolution for the entire industry very soon.”
