Only half of required number of trainee teachers recruited

Only half the intended number of secondary teachers are likely to be recruited this year, new figures suggest.

Analysis of data from last month shows 52 per cent of the desired number of secondary trainees will start courses this autumn, according to two teaching unions.

About 13,800 candidates have been recruited or have deferred places but the government’s target is for 26,360 trainees, an increase of 26 per on last year. This reflects the growing secondary age pupil population as a baby boom moves through from primary school to secondary.

The failure to meet the target is despite an increase in bursary payments for people choosing secondary teacher training courses.
