Barack Obama wrote about ‘making love to men daily, but in the imagination’ in a 40-year-old letter which has recently resurfaced. The letter, obtained by the New York Post , was written to Obama’s then-girlfriend Alex McNear who dated the former president when he attended Occidental College. ‘In regard to homosexuality, I must say that I believe this is an attempt to remove oneself from the present, a refusal perhaps to perpetuate the endless farce of earthly life. You see, I make love to men daily, but in the imagination,’ Obama – who was 21 at the time – wrote in November 1982. He continued: ‘My mind is androgynous to a great extent and I hope to make it more so until I can think in terms of people, not women as opposed to men. But, in returning to the body, I see that I have been made a man, and physically in life, I choose to accept that contingency.’ McNear redacted parts of the letter but Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Obama biographer David Garrow was able to hunt down the missing passage. However, Garrow got around this by having his friend Harvey Klehr transcribe it by hand. The author used the passages in his 2017 Obama biography Rising Star. Klehr provided the redacted portions revealing the former president’s ‘androgynous mind’ to the New York Post. Barrack and Michelle Obama married in 1992 and have two daughters.
