★★★★★There are encores – and then there are BBC Proms encores. This year’s National Youth Orchestra (NYO) performance featured two classics of the genre: unexpected, memorable and full of flair. At the end of the first half, NYO downed instruments to become a choir, a massive, impressive backing group for the soloist Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha. The soprano often programmes spirituals in her recitals and she soared in Errollyn Wallen’s The Whole World, a beautiful new arrangement of He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands. It was utterly uplifting.
Then later, before the full house headed home, the conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto swivelled to the arena: “Do you know how to dance?” He certainly did, showing us some nifty footwork, exuding irrepressible
