Nursery owner faces drug charges after boy’s death

The owner of a New York nursery where a toddler died last week after being exposed to fentanyl has been hit with federal drug charges, days after being accused of the boy’s murder.

Grei Mendez, 36, who operates Divino Niño Daycare in the Bronx, was arrested over the weekend with Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, her husband’s cousin, who was renting a bedroom in the nursery.

Both were charged in a state court with murder of “depraved indifference” after one-year-old Nicholas Dominici died on Friday. He had been exposed to a 1kg brick of fentanyl stored at the nursery. Three other children became dangerously ill.

Investigators said they were looking for Mendez’s husband, who fled shortly after learning of the incident.
