Nicola Sturgeon out of date on euro, warns ex-MEP David Martin

Brussels is taking a tougher stance on EU applicants joining the euro and an independent Scotland would need to sign up to the single currency, a former MEP cited by Nicola Sturgeon has said.

David Martin, who represented Labour in the European parliament between 1984 and 2019, was quoted by the first minister as she argued that her plan of using sterling unilaterally before moving to a new Scottish pound would not be a barrier to joining the bloc.

Sturgeon quoted a number of sources, including Martin, who was vice-president of the European parliament from 1989 to 2004, to back up her position. In 2014, he told the Sunday Herald: “They’re not going to force us to join the euro.”
