Nicola Sturgeon denies lying in saying a separate Scotland in EU didn’t have to use euro

Douglas Ross, the Scottish Tory leader, says her comments were ‘not true’ as all member countries must commit to the single currency

Nicola Sturgeon has denied lying after experts and EU insiders rubbished her insistence a separate Scotland in the EU could avoid committing to the euro.

The First Minister rejected the accusation by Douglas Ross, the Scottish Tory leader, arguing that a range of existing EU members did not use the single currency.

In her latest economic blueprint for separation, published earlier this month, she had insisted Scotland would move from sterling to a Scottish pound as soon as possible after independence.

Ms Sturgeon had said the euro was “not the right option for Scotland” but Mr Ross pointed out all countries in the EU have to commit to the single currency, with insiders warning that the rules would be more stringently applied to new members since the 2016 Brexit vote.
