Next England head coach need not be English, says RFU — as door opens for Ronan O’Gara and Scott Robertson

The RFU no longer mind if Eddie Jones’ successor is another foreigner, as they want to finalise the appointment of a new England head coach by May.

Bill Sweeney, the union’s chief executive, said in March this year that he wanted an English coach to succeed Jones when he leaves after the 2023 World Cup.

However he has cooled that stance having drawn up a list of candidates, increasing the chances England will look at New Zealander Scott Robertson and Irishman Ronan O’Gara as well as Leicester Tigers director of rugby Steve Borthwick.
