Newcastle star Elliot Anderson was struck by a bottle as he celebrated a first-half goal during his side’s Premier League encounter with Sheffield United on Sunday. The Magpies were in fine form during the opening period of the showdown at Bramall Lane as they raced to a 3-0 lead by half time. Newcastle had endured an underwhelming start to the new Premier League season after winning just two of their opening five matches and losing the other three. But Eddie Howe’s side were in fine form in Sheffield as they attempted to keep pace with the teams in the top half of the table. The Magpies went ahead just before the midway point of the first half as Sean Longstaff swept the ball into the back of the net after good work from Anthony Gordon on the byline. And the away team doubled their advantage after 31 minutes as Dan Burn headed in Kieran Trippier’s corner at the far post. Newcastle well and truly found their stride against last season’s Championship runners-up and killed off the contest four minutes later when Trippier turned provider for the second time to fire the ball onto the head of Sven Botman from a delicious free-kick. But as Anderson raced over to join the centre-back and other team-mates, he was struck by a bottle, which hit his legs. And he instinctively jumped into the air as the object hit him. Newcastle continued where they left off after the interval as Callum Wilson got in on the action with his side’s fourth goal 11 minutes into the second half. And Gordon added a fifth just after the hour mark. The north east giants have a packed schedule this season after returning to the Champions League but didn’t show any signs of a hangover after their 0-0 draw with AC Milan at the San Siro Stadium on Tuesday night. And ahead of the clash with Sheffield United, boss Howe told reporters: ‘The players were in yesterday (Thursday). I wouldn’t say we trained because we probably can’t train at the moment. That would be a negative if you take more out of the players. Obviously, a group of players did but the ones that started the game didn’t. ‘We probably won’t train fully before the game. We will be training but not at our maximum level. We’re trying to be smart with our time in between games, especially with the demand on the players so big, both mentally and physically. We’ve got to get that balance right for them.’
