New PM is highly capable but faces challenges that may prove beyond him

What are the implications for Ireland of the election of Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party and his appointment as British prime minister? While Sunak’s term in office is likely to be short, I find it hard to see anything negative in his election.

The most important aspect to consider about Sunak is his politics. He’s ideologically right-wing. Most Irish people would consider that a negative. I consider it a positive. He is ideological and has a clear political belief system.

That gave him the self-confidence to question the severity of the UK Covid lockdown – the sole minister around the Downing Street cabinet table to do so. It gave him the impetus to initiate the Eat Out to Help Out
