New Orleans Saints new Australian left behind two modest jobs for NFL dream

The New Orleans Saints have an Aussie on its roster for the upcoming 2023 NFL season after picking undrafted rookie punter Lou Hedley for its squad

Lou Hedley will be flying the Australian flag in the NFL after the undrafted 30-year-old rookie punter earned a spot on the New Orleans Saints roster ahead of the 2023 season.

The father of one, who used to be a scaffolder and an owner of a tattoo shop on the Indonesian island of Bali, will rake in a minimum of $750,000. It is close to, if not better, than what footballers in Australia would earn.

Hedley grew up in a town called Leeman, which is less than 400 people strong, and his dad worked as a cray fisherman. The 6-foot-4 kicker played for Peel Thunder in the Western Australian Football League before deciding that he wanted to try his luck in American football.

The Australian attended the City College of San Francisco in California in 2017 before moving to the University of Miami, where he played for the Hurricanes for four years. It was there where he impressed after learning the rules of American football, playing 47 games, while punting 206 times with an average of 45.2 yards per try.
