Scotland’s ferry construction crisis has deepened further as the nationalised shipbuilder revealed that Arran’s next vessel – five years overdue – will initially have to operate only on diesel.
The Scottish government has made bold claims about the environmental credentials of two new dual-fuel CalMac ferries being built at the Ferguson yard, hailing their ability to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). But in a letter to a Holyrood committee on Friday, David Tydeman, the chief executive of Ferguson Marine, warned that a “technical design issue” had been identified that would delay the commissioning of the LNG system on the Glen Sannox.
