Mike Gesicki signed with the New England Patriots in free agency and had begun to develop a role for himself in the AFC East franchise’s offense before suffering an injury in practice on Monday
The New England Patriots offense has been handed a brutal blow as tight end Mike Gesicki sustained a dislocated shoulder – but he could return in time for Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Back in March, Gesicki signed a one-year,$4.5 million (£3.5m) contract with New England that could double if incentives are met. He is expected to form a tight-end tandem with Hunter Henry to improve a revamped Patriots offense under returning offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, who first masterminded a double tight-end system with Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski.
The Patriots’ offense was dismal in 2022, finishing 32nd in red zone efficiency en route to an 8-9 record. Changes were made in the form of O’Brien’s return, while receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, Gesicki and newly-added running back Ezekiel Elliott were brought in as weapons for assumed starting quarterback Mac Jones, who is competing with sophomore Bailey Zappe to pilot the Pats offense in 2023.
On Monday, however, Gesicki injured his AC joint. It is frustrating news for the 27-year-old, as he was reportedly beginning to impress the coaching staff in practice.
