Pooh, Piglet and Eeyore have a new friend. Almost 70 years after AA Milne’s death, a new character will join his much-loved characters in Hundred Acre Wood.
A little dog named Carmen will make her debut in Winnie-the-Pooh: Tales from the Forest, a new sequel to be published later this month. The new character is inspired by the tiny stuffed toy AA Milne took with him to the trenches in the First World War. It was a lucky mascot that he quipped had saved him from the Somme.
The author Jane Riordan was inspired to introduce Carmen after discovering an article from the Sunday Express in 1966, in which AA Milne’s, Daphne, wife spoke about the toy.
