Net zero threatens end of the line for Volkswagen’s best-selling Polo

German car giant weighing up whether to end production amid shift to electric vehicles

Volkswagen could scrap its best-selling Polo before the end of the decade as the German car giant goes electric.

The Wolfsburg-based company is weighing up whether to end production in Europe as it shifts to electric, the Financial Times reported. It comes as executives assess which models to electrify and which to retire.

The Polo has been rolling off Volkswagen’s production lines since 1975 and the current model is set to run until 2026. However, production could be stopped after that.

The car is Volkswagen’s second best-selling vehicle globally. It costs around €20,000 (£17,200) to purchase and is manufactured in factories in China, Spain, South Africa and Brazil.
