National Grid says seven times as much infrastructure must be built in the next seven or eight years than was built in the last 32
Hundreds of miles of new cables and pylons will be needed across the UK for the country to meet its net zero goals, the head of National Grid has said.
Infrastructure needed for electric cars, heat pumps and industrial electrification would have to be built at a much faster pace than in the past, John Pettigrew said.
“We will need to build about seven times as much infrastructure in the next seven or eight years than we built in the last 32,” the National Grid CEO told the BBC.
Electricity cables running from new wind turbines off the east coast to parts of southern England where the power is required will be necessary if the Government is to hit its target of a 400 per cent increase in offshore wind, Mr Pettigrew said.
