The attacker then pulled the hammer away from Mr Pelosi and attacked him with it before police disarmed him. Joe Biden said he had spoken with Ms Pelosi and was "praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi's whole family". The attack was condemned by a chorus of Democrats and Republicans. Chuck Schumer, the Democratic senate leader, called it a "dastardly attack". His Republican counterpart, Mitch McConnell, said he was 'horrified and disgusted' by the news. The attack has added fresh urgency to calls for additional support for Congress members and their families amid a rise in threats towards elected officials. Pramila Jayapal, a Democratic congresswoman who was recently threatened at her home, said Speaker Pelosi 'was very sympathetic to the need to get additional security for members'. Ms Pelosi was in Washington with her protective detail at the time, just 11 days before a high-stakes midterm election which is likely to end her party's control of the House of Representatives. Mr Biden and other senior Democrats were caught on a hot-mic Thursday offering a shrewd assessment of the race. Mr Schumer told the president the party was 'in danger" of losing a seat in the currently 50-50 split Senate. It was unclear to which seat he was referring. The attacker entered the Pelosi family home at around 2.27am on Friday through a sliding glass door at the rear. Police did not offer a motive for the attack. But it was a chilling echo of the chants of pro-Trump rioters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6 last year. Nancy Pelosi’s husband was attacked by a hammer-wielding assailant who broke into the Democratic House Speaker’s home shouting: “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy”.
Paul Pelosi, 82, reportedly suffered blunt force injuries to his head and body after being confronted by the attacker at the couple’s longtime family residence in San Francisco.
The incident has further stoked fears of politically motivated violence heading into the US midterm elections in just over a week’s time.
Mr Pelosi was being treated in hospital but is expected to make a full recovery, the Speaker’s office said.
