‘My wife is ill so we can’t go abroad for daughter’s wedding but she doesn’t care’

A desperate dad has asked Mirror agony aunt Coleen Nolan for advice because, while he and his wife are desperate to attend the wedding, he feels their daughter isn’t hugely bothered

My wife and I are in our late 60s and our daughter, who’s 38, has decided to go to America to get married. She and her fiancé met a couple of years ago and have a one-year-old daughter, so I suppose their romance has been a whirlwind, although that’s not the main problem.

My wife is distraught they’ve chosen to marry abroad because we can’t be there. She has been in and out of hospital with various health issues and simply isn’t confident enough to make the trip, plus there’s the expense of it all.

When we told our daughter we couldn’t be there, all she said was that it was a shame and that we could do something to celebrate when they got back. Her fiancé’s family are going, as well as a few of their friends.

My wife is distraught, especially as my daughter just doesn’t seem to understand why this is so important to us and why we’re upset. We don’t really want to get into more discussions with her in case we say something we regret. Unfortunately, I think my daughter is so wrapped up in her partner and his family that she doesn’t care.
