‘My son choked to death in a pub – now I’m demanding change that will save lives’

Marty Weir, praised as a ‘big friendly giant’ by his mother Claire, died when he choked while eating and suffered a cardiac arrest at the Mersey View pub, Liverpool, in April last year

A mum whose son choked on a piece of meat before suffering a cardiac arrest during a meal out at a pub has spoken out to warn others of the dangers.

Marty Weir, 26, of Broom Way in Halewood, Liverpool, was having lunch at the Mersey View in April last year when a piece of meat caught in his throat. He suffered a cardiac arrest and was taken to Whiston Hospital, where he died a short time later. His mum Claire has paid tribute to her football-loving son and pledged her support for anti-choking devices to be placed in pubs and restaurants.

The 49-year-old told the Echo : “We summed him up as our big friendly giant, because he was such a lovely person. It’s easy for me to say, because I’m his mum, but the amount of people who have come to my door and told me their memories of Marty is unbelievable. He loved football. He was renowned for his love of football; his main position was goalie but he could play anywhere, and he played for many different local teams growing up.

“This past year has been horrible for us. It seems to be getting worse, not better, because you’ve got the ‘first’ of everything. First Christmas, first New Year, first birthday without him. It’s very hard.”
