‘My friend has changed for worse since she came into money’

Coleen Nolan advises a reader whose long-time pal has become obnoxious in flaunting her new-found wealth

I feel very upset with a close friend and I’m not sure how to play it. I know it’s going to sound like I’m envious of her, but I’m more hurt that she’s changed as a person and I feel like I hardly know her.

We’ve known each other for years after meeting on our first day at new jobs. We’d both recently graduated and had a lot in common, and quickly became firm friends. We stayed mates when we moved on to different jobs, moved house, got married, had kids and so on.

However, I couldn’t feel further apart from her now. She recently came into quite a lot of money after her father died and his business was sold. It didn’t take long before she moved into a huge house, bought a new car and started going on lavish holidays.

This would all be fine, except she’s boastful about everything now and I’m finding it hard to know what to say to her to keep the conversation going.
