In a New York Times opinion piece called American Theater Is Imploding Before Our Eyes [sic], a woman called Diana went to the comments to share a story about a theatre trip she tried to organise with her husband and son. 'I actually bought tickets to the theater [sic] a few months ago,' she writes. 'I carefully looked for something that might appeal to my husband and son. I found a version of The Tempest with a real magician playing Prospero, doing real magic tricks. 'But as the event approached, it was clear that they would do this for me, but as passively as possible. Their faces would go into completely neutral mode whenever I spoke about it.' (Picture: Getty Images) She then dove into the 'rather complicated' logistics of organising the trip, due to the 'long metro ride' and the fact they'd need to make a dinner booking nearby. 'Lots of work for me,' she wrote. 'When the day came, I just couldn't bear it. All that work and my family wouldn't even pretend to be happy. 'They were carefully, thoroughly non-committal. So I faked an illness and curled up in bed.' She ended her story by speculating that she thinks men have got it in their heads that theatre isn't for them. 'I think a dynamic like this is going on in many families,' she explained. 'And if you cannot get families, the market is always going to be small. Most men have just decided that this is a girl's thing, and they are just not interested.' When a screenshot of her comment was shared on Twitter, it earned 28,000 likes as of the time this article was written.
