Mum Sally Challen jailed for killing abusive husband has found love with teen crush

Two years after her release from prison, Sally Challen married Dell, who was her first husband’s best man at their wedding and previously offered to testify on her behalf

A mum-of-two who killed her husband with a hammer after three decades of abuse has finally found love with her teenage crush.

Sally Challen was charged with murder and jailed for life in 2011, but in a landmark case had the charge changed to manslaughter in June 2019. With her time served already, she walked free and was reunited with her two sons.

It was the first time an appeal referred to the defence of coercive and controlling behaviour, which was only recognised in law as a form of domestic abuse in 2015. Two years after her release from prison, Sally married Dell, who was her first husband’s best man at their wedding and previously offered to testify on her behalf.

The pair are now living happily in a home which they bought together. Sally has decided to speak out to “show other women that there can be life – happy life – after coercive control”.
